OK you didn't mention SP Page builder at first. You said you wee trying to edit *joomla* articles, not SPPB pages. Are you trying to edit Joomla Articles or SP Page Builder Pages?
I use SPPB and never had that issue. I always load the page (front end) then click the "Edit Page" button, rather than from SPPB's admin interface clicking the page in the page list "front end editor" button.
But if you believe it's a bug in SPPB, suggest you post on Joomshaper.com forum.
@pavel-ww (forum member) is also a user of SPPB I believe, so may provide some insight.
