When you view the article in the front end, and are logged in with a suitable user, are you seeing the "Edit" button?
I've never experienced that behaviour - if I click "Edit", the article opens in edit mode. What template are you using, and what version of Joomla within the 5.x series? Are you using an framework and template from developers like Helix, T4, Astroid, Gantry etc?
It might be useful if we understood your installation a little better. Please post the FPA report.

Can you test a new install of Joomla (e.g. on a sub-domain or even offline on a localhost server like WAMPserver), latest J5 version, default install - add the sample data or create a dummy article e.g. with Lorem Ipsum dummy text. Create a menu item for it. View in the front, end, logged in as an appropriate user; does that article show the "Edit" button and does it open the article in Edit mode or opens the editor for a new article?
